Planning recessed lighting? Learn how many cans you need, spacing rules, LED wafer vs can lights, dimmer compatibility and what electricians charge per light in Texas.
Recessed lighting is the fastest way to modernize a kitchen or living room. Here's what to know before you call for lighting installation.
A quick rule: divide ceiling height by 2 to get spacing in feet. An 8-ft ceiling means lights every 4 feet. A 12×16 kitchen typically needs 8–10 lights.
Ultra-thin LED wafers need no housing, fit in tight joist bays and are IC-rated for insulation contact. Traditional cans allow trim swaps but need more space.
Pair LEDs with a compatible LED dimmer (Lutron Diva/Caséta, for example) to avoid flicker. We can also add smart dimmers.
Expect $125–$250 per light installed in an accessible attic, more for finished ceilings below living space. A new switch loop or dimmer switch adds $100–$250.
